Bosnia 2002
For two weeks in March 2002, I had the honor of traveling to Bosnia Herzegovina under the sponsorship of The United States State Department. Face-to-Face Interreligious Services of Sarajevo worked in tandem with the United States State Department to plan and arrange aspects of this tour. I am grateful to both organizations for their interest and efforts in making this tour so successful. Read More.
Northern Ireland 2003
From October 22 to November 3 of 2003, I had the honor of touring in Northern Ireland.
I sang in churches, concert halls, public schools and at informal gatherings. Seattle-based pianist Lisa Bergman traveled with me. Not only did we learn a great deal about the longstanding Protestant Catholic conflict, we had several opportunities to visit with in mixed company with these people. We discovered that music is a powerful tool that assists in connecting our spirits one to another. Read More.
China 2005
From May 9 through June 7, 2005, I had the honor of touring The Peoples Republic of China. I was sponsored by China Educational Exchange, which is a US-based organization that enters into cultural exchange with China in the area of higher education. Read More.
Moldova 2006
I have had ten very good days here in Moldova and I have learned a lot about this country. It is one of the poorest countries in Europe. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, this country has struggled economically. Thirty-two percent of the work force is in other countries and the money they make is sent back to their families. There has been a mass exodus to other countries in the western world. The level of unemployment is high and there seems to be little progress in changing this. The government is communist at present and they are doing little to improve the situation. Many people in the villages are simply living off their crops. Read More.
Russia 2006
I spent four days in Moscow and four days in Siberia. The time in Moscow felt like a vacation, for the most part. I visited Moscow in 1976 as a very young man. I was surprised at just how much it had changed. Capitalism has arrived in Moscow. It is a city of about 12 million people. Read More.
Uganda 2006
We (pianist Ken Rodgers and I) were greeted by Ricky Anywar who is the Director of Friends of Orphans , which is the organization that made the invitation to me. It was raining here when we met, and he told us that when it rains, God is pouring his blessings down on us. He thought of our coming as God sending him blessing. We were honored to be thought of in that way. We knew, however, that we too will receive many blessings while here. Read More.
Far East 2006
On September 14, I flew to the Far East. My travels took me to Khabarovsk, Russia. There, I met pianist Roma Eicher and her husband, Sam. We performed at the College for the Fine Arts in Khabarovsk. It was a great occasion to talk about music, meet students and faculty and to perform. Read More.
Ethiopia 2007
On May 8, 2007, I sang a concert of American Music at the US Ambassador's home in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The invited guests were ambassadors from around the world and other dignitaries from Ethiopia. It was a grand evening! They enjoyed the music as well as the historical explanations that put the music into historical context. Read More.
Northern Ireland 2007
In September of 2007, I spent two weeks in Northern Ireland at the invitation of the Quakers of Northern Ireland. I performed in churches, concert halls, schools, prisons and community centers. This was my third visit to Northern Ireland beginning in 2003. I was delighted to return there as I have developed abiding friendships and have come to have a deep appreciation for the Celtic culture of Northern Ireland. I am always pleased to meet other local musicians who perform Irish folk music and I am always honored to make at least one appearance in an Irish pub. Read More.
Japan 2008
On June 4th, 2008 I traveled to Japan for what would be a six-month visit. There, I studied as a visiting researcher at Hokusai University in Sapporo and performed around the country. It was a very rich educational experience. I had the opportunity to speak and sing professionally in Churches, Buddhist Temples, concert halls and Universities. My new Japanese friends took me out to sing karaoke on a few occasions. It was great fun! Read More.
